G.A.R. Veteran Dies on Morning Of Memorial Day
Comrade Charles W. Clayberger Summoned Hence
Comrade Charles W. Clayberger took his final order from the Great Commander on Memorial day morning at 6:45. He was mustered out of life and into that great army of veterans to whose memory tribute is paid each year on May 30 by a nation grateful to those who had carried arms in its defense. He was in his 88th year and his passing has reduced the ranks of Yeager Post, No. 13, G. A. R., to two members. Commander Gus Vogt, of this city, and Morris Wolf, ill at the Haff hospital, Northampton. His death on Memorial day was received with grief by the little band of men in the community who now compose the last remnants of the armies of the Civil War. Death came peacefully at his home, 414 North Eighth street, after illness of a year. Despite his sinility he had hoped to take part in yesterday's celebration as he had since coming to Allentown 32 years ago and expressed this desire last week. However, his condition became worse and complications hastened his end.
Mr. Clayberger had been in excellent health and of keen mind throughout all of his life and was able to relate many interesting experiences about his days in the Civil War.
It was in the battle of Gettysburg that he won distinction for which he was later commended by President Lincoln. He served in the Eleventh United States Regulars and Company G, 188th Regiment.
Mr. Clayberger enlisted in the army shortly after the war broke out and took part in the following battles:
1861--July 18, battle of Blackburn's Ford, Va.; July 21, Manassas Junction, Va.; July 27, battles of Gainsville, Va., on to Greenwich and Bristol Station, Va.; August 1 to 10, several skirmishes up to Warrenton Junction, Va.; September 1, battle of Germantown to Centerville; September 11, Fairfax Court House; September 25, Fairfax Station; October 2, Chantilla, Va.; October 21, Ball's Bluff and December 20, Battle of Dranesvilla, Va.
1862--April 5 to May 12, siege of Yorktown; May 15, battle of Fort Donelson, Va.; May 23-25, Fort Royal on to Winchester, Va.; June 27 to July 1, seven days on the peninsula of Virginia; September 3 to 19, the Maryland campaign; September 12, Harper's Ferry; November 15, Burnside's expedition; September 20, battle of Shepherdstown Ford, Va.; December 11-15, Fredericksburg, Va., and winter headquarters at Perryville.
1863--June 5 to 13, battle of Franklin Crossing and Deep Run, Va.; July 3, battle of Gettysburg, where Mr. Clayberger was injured; July 16, Shepherds town, W. Va.; August 1, battle of Brandy Station; October 14, Bristol Station, and November 7, Kelly's Ford.
Other battles were, the Proctor's creek encounter, the fight at Durie's Bluff, the battle of Cold Harbor and provost duty at the Siege of Lynchburg.
Mr. Clayberger was born in Lancaster county on April 6, 1845, a son of the late Adam and Julian Clayberger. He made his home in that section for some time and later moved to Shamokin from where he came to this city thirty-two years ago.
He was a member of the G. A. R., post in Shamokin, the Yeager Post, No. 13, of this city, and the Odd Fellows lodge, local chapter.
He was also a member of the Encampment of the Union Veteran Legion. His wife, Mary, (nee Mensch) still survives as do the following children: Charles G., Glouster, Ohio, Henry, Portland, Oregon; George Roscoe, also of Portland, Oregon and Jennie, wife of the late Harry Zimmerman of this city; William Ray, Army Given and Thomas Graul, children, preceded him in death as did the following brothers and sisters: Samuel, William Henry, Sarah Ann, Hannah, Adam and Isaac.
Two brothers, Benjamin Franklin and Edward; seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, also survive.
Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed. Rev. Maury will officiate.
