Carlton Dies At Age 73 John C. Carlton, 73, died Wednesday. He was bom in Halifax County, Va. He was the son of the late Thomas. C. and Ida Crute Carlton. He was a former chairman of Edgecombe County Board of Public Welfare and former member of the State Board of Public Welfare. He was also on the Board of Governors of the Bright Belt Warehouse Association, charter member of the Pinetops Lions Club and chairman of the Administrative Board of Pinetops United Methodist Church. Carlton had been a tobacco warehouseman in Rocky Mount for 25 years and also in Farmville for 25 years. A funeral is scheduled at 3 p.m. Friday at Pinetops United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lloyd Edge officiating. Burial in Pinetops Cemetery. Survivors: wife, Mrs. Kittye P. Carlton; one son, Supreme Court Justice J. Phil Carlton of Pinetops; one step-daughter, Mrs. Gayle C. Felton of Pinetops; five sisters, Mrs. Lucille C. Cole and Mrs. Mae Dixon Pendergrass, both of Wilson, Mrs. Polly C. Hume of Shepherdstown, West Va., Mrs. Marguerite C. Phillips of Fountain and Miss Lillian Carlton of Tarboro; two brothers, Milton Carlton of Pinetops and Hilton Carlton of Wilson; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren. Carlton will lie in state at the Pinetops United Methodist Church from 5 p. m. today until the funeral Friday. Arrangements by Carlisle Funeral Home, Tarboro.
