Driver Dies When Heavy Truck Bed Crushes His Head

While attempting to repair his truck Thursday morning, Anthony H. Oswald, 49-year-old coal truck driver, of 727 Nancy avenue, was instantly killed when the steel truck-bed fell and crushed his head.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the home with Rev. Paul N. Varner officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park.

According to reports, Oswald had finished delivering a load of coal and had stopped at the Star filling station on the East pike to repair the body of the truck.

Raising the bed of the truck to a dumping position, Oswald leaned toward the center of the truck chassis when the heavy hydraulic-operated steel bed suddenly fell on his head.

A native of Edwardsville, Ill., Oswald came her a number of years ago. He was a driver for the Hillside Coal company but operated his own truck, it was said.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Florence Oswald; a step-daughter, Betty Woerner, of Norval Park, and a number of brothers and sisters in Marine, Ill.

The body was removed to the Bateman funeral home and will be taken to the home this morning.
