"NOT A SUICIDE," MAN'S FRIENDS SAY
Friends Declare Farmer Was Done To Death
Sunbury, Oct. 17.--"We as a jury decide according to the testimony that Edward Clayberger came to his death by the accidental discharge of a gun in his own hand."
The above was the verdict arrived at by a jury empaneled by Dr. J. K. Fisher of this city, county coroner, at an inquest into the death of Edward Clayberger, a farmer who resided east of this city, near the "love nest," who was fatally shot early Friday morning held Saturday night.
The coroner's jury consisted of: A. M. Snyder, foreman; Clinton H. Herb, Bert W. Witmer, W. B. Savidge, John J. Dobbin and D. J. Beck.
Testimony of Samuel Riland, Constable A. S. Witmer, of Augustaville, and his son, Albert Witmer, together with Mrs. Clayberger, the widow, was heard and corresponded almost to the letter as to the details of the shooting.
The sworn statement from Mrs. Clayberger given Coroner Fisher states that her husband left home on April 6 and that he returned home three times since. The last time he was home, the wife gave him $30 to buy some clothes in order that he could remain at home but instead he skipped again. Last Saturday night a week ago, Clayberger called the "Love Nest" and instructed the party on this end to have his wife at the place Sunday night between 7.30 and 9 o'clock that he would call again. She refused to do his demands and when Clayberger called he asked that his wife be told that he was in Northern Michigan.
Thursday night about 9.30 o'clock he reappeared at his home and knocked on the door. His wife demanded: "Who's out?"
"Someone you know," Clayberger is alleged to have said. The wife then recognized his voice and opened the door.
"Well, are you still my wife?" the husband queried.
"I don't believe I ought to be the way you treated me," she answered.
Clayberger asked about the children and went upstairs to see them. Returning to the kitchen, he queried: "How's everything at home?"
"They're pretty sore at you," Mrs. Clayberger replied.
"Well, then I guess I'll kill myself," he announced, beginning to open the suitcase, which he carried. Mrs. Clayberger became frightened and ran to a neighbor's where she secured a car and was taken to Augustaville where Constable Albert Witmer was secured.
They found Clayberger in bed when they returned and as they entered the room he went to draw his hand from under the cover, when his wife grabbed his arm and the constable also came to her rescue. In the tussle, Clayberger was shot and died several hours later.
