Harryette C. Jordan, volunteer
Harryette Clayberger Jordan, 93, of Worcester, a community volunteer and pilot, died of heart failure Friday, April 2 at Mercy Suburban Hospital in East Norriton.
Mrs. Jordan grew up in Washington, D.C., and Burlington County and graduated from what is now Rancocas Valley Regional High School.
In 1936 she married James W. Jordan. They raised three children in South Jersey. After they moved to Collegeville in the mid-1950s, Mrs. Jordan became an active volunteer with the Well Baby Clinics at Norristown Hospital, Eagleville Hospital, and Montgomery County Hospital, where she was recognized for more than 2,000 hours of service.
Mrs. Jordan was also a Girl Scout leader for a troop in Collegeville and once drove six scouts to the Grand Canyon, where they camped in a pop-up tent, her son Joseph said.
When she was in her 50s, Mrs. Jordan earned a pilot's license and became an instructor at Wings Field in Blue Bell.
She was an accomplished knitter and seamstress, crafted silver jewelry for family and friends, and was a talented water colorist, her son said.
She enjoyed swimming and loved rockhounding, archaeology, and geology into her 90s, he said.
Mrs. Jordan was a member of the Norristown Art League and the 99ers, a local stock-investment club.
She and her husband moved to Meadowood, a retirement community in Worcester, 15 years ago. He died in 1998.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Jordan is survived by sons James Jr. and John; daughter Toni; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, in the library at Meadowood, 3205 Skippack Pike, Worcester.
