Samuel Clayberger Passed Away Shortly After Noon Hour Yesterday From Effects of Infection of Foot
Samuel Clayberger, veteran of the Civil war and one of Coal township's most prominent citizens, passed peacefully to his eternal rest shortly after noon yesterday, death resulting from an infection of the foot that became first noticeable in the early part of April.
Despite the skill of several attending physicians and the constant care and nursing of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Clayberger, Jr., the former a son of the deceased, gangrene subsequently developed and hastened the death of the pioneer citizen.
Samuel Clayberger was born In York county, Pennsylvania, January 16, 1847. His parents moved to the Roaring Creek Valley when he was a boy, where in his youthful days he worked on his father's farm, later coming to this section of the anthracite regions and securing work in the mines.
VETERAN WITH SHERMAN DIES
Upon the call of Abraham Lincoln for volunteers to defend the union, Samuel Clayberger enlisted for service at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, as a private in Co. K, Forty-sixth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and later took part in the "March to the Sea" with General Sherman as one of the youngest soldiers in the army. He was seriously wounded in an engagement at Atlanta, Ga., eventually recovering and was mustered out at the close of the war with an honorable discharge and returned to his home. He then re-entered the mines and became one of the best versed mining men in this section.
Finally abandoning employment in the mines, the deceased entered the government service as mail agent between Sunbury and Mt. Carmel, where he was employed for several years.
Mr. Clayberger was a man of many attainments. Receiving his early education in country schools, a keen desire for learning made him a constant reader and student during his leisure hours.
Upon entering the field of politics, the esteem in which he was held by many acquaintences of Coal Township led to his election to almost every office within the grant of the people. At different times he was constable, justice of the peace, because of which judicial position his friends thereafter called him "Squire," auditor, tax collector, assessor and school director. He had lived retired for the past several years and had been a respected resident of Boydtown for the past fifty-seven years.
On May 22, 1868, he was married at Excelsior to Miss Ann Boyd, who preceded her husband in death on July 27 of the present year. In the early days of Trinity Episcopal church Mr. Clayberger served as vestryman. Fraternally he was a member of Camp 619, P. O. S. of A.
Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Jennie Olley, Boydtown; Adam Clayberger, Brady; Robert, of Kulpmont; Samuel, of Poughkeepsie, New York, and Henry, 1525 West Arch street, Edgewood. There are also twenty-three grand-children and six great grand-children.
Funeral services will be held from the family residence at Boydtown on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, with Rev. P. H. Asheton-Martin, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Odd Fellows' cemetery.
