Dr. Donald Paterson Services In Overton
OVERTON--Services for Dr. Donald R. Paterson, 83, Overton, are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, of Overton with the Rev. W.E. "Doug" Blanton officiating.
Burial will be in Overton City Cemetery under direction of Cottle-Pearson Funeral Home, Overton.
Dr. Paterson died July 18 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
He was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Burke, N.Y., to the late Joseph Robert and Carolyn Hunter Paterson. He received his bachelor's degree in 1947 from Cornell University, his master's degree in 1950 from University of California in Davis, Calif., and his doctorate in 1952 from Michigan State University.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in England. He was a professor at Texas A&M Agricultural Research and Experimental Station in Overton 1952-1989, when he was named professor emeritus. He was honored as Horticultural Science Fellow on Aug. 2, 1979 by American Society and in 1988 by Texas Sweet Potato Council for 35 years service.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Overton, Overton Rotary Club, where he served as president in 1980 and 1981, and a member of Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi. He published numerous articles, manuscripts, abstracts, presentations and received 23 grants for research. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Carol Winifred Hinks Paterson on March 24, 1996, and sister, Elizabeth Jean Paterson.
Survivors include daughters, Beth Paterson Smith, Winston-Salem, N.C, Bonnie Lou Paterson Mangum, Midland, and Kerry Lynn Paterson Zoth, Deer Park; and seven grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Dr. Charles Long, Dr. George Philley, Will Roberson, Dr. Lloyd Nelson, Dr. Brent Temberton and Ron Earhart.
Family will receive friends 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
